transcendentalism: what

Very excellent; superior or supreme in excellence; surpassing others; as transcendent worth; transcendent valor. Cloth’d with transcendent brightness. -Milton.
-Noah Webster, American Dictionary of the English Language

that which is beyond our senses and experience. Existing apart from matter.
-Google define:transcendent result

I call all knowledge transcendental if it is occupied, not with objects, but with the way that we can possibly know objects even before we experience them.
-Immanual Kant, Critique of Pure Reason

In religion, transcendence is a condition or state of being that surpasses, and is independent of, physical existence.
-Wikipedia entry, "transcendence (religion)"

transcendentalism: why

According to Clive Bell, there is a "uniquely aesthetic emotion" which each of us experiences. I like to think that transcendetal art is that art which provokes such a strong aesthetic emotion in us that it leads us beyond ourselves, beyond everything we conventionally "know" into realms of pure intuition and fertile imagination. The idea of this community is to share art that makes us feel that way.

transcendentalism: how

As a rough guideline to posting, just fill in where applicable:

title of piece:
artist:
medium:
your BIG transcendental feelings:
...and the piece itself, of course!

Take a look at old posts for an idea.

transcendentalism: do

Acceptable media: songs, song lyrics, video clips, snatches (big and small) of a book/poem/whatever, pictures, paintings, DIY projects, found things, huge fanfiction epics, not-so-huge fanfiction epics, moments in real life, etc etc etc...

transcendentalism: don't

This is a community of art lovers. Not mean people, spambots or dirty things.

Humor is a good idea.

transcendentalism: narcissism

Yes, there are times when we wear our Artist hats and manage to make something which makes us feel sublimely transcendental. If you have such a piece, feel free to share. But this isn't a community for self-promotion, feedback on half-finished projects, criticism (even the constructive kind), or variations on those themes.

This is for art lovers who just want to bask in the glow of beautiful amazingness. This is a place to put art that stirs in us nearly religious feelings. You could call us the Sufi equivalents of art lovers.
